THIS YEAR.. CHRISTMAS IN THE WESTERN CAPE
This year I will be enjoying the West Coast of Western Cape with my boyfriend and his family. South Africa celebrates its festive season in summer, that being said, you’ll still find all the classic traditions like Christmas trees, pudding and markets. We love taking advantage of this warm weather by enjoying the amazing beaches, hiking, mountains, forests and waterfalls. On Christmas day, I will be experiencing a blend of British and South African traditions for the first time, so it will be something new for me too!
CHRISTMAS IN THE SUMMER
One major difference is that in South Africa, Christmas is in the middle of summer! In fact, flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and everything just has a happy “vibe” to it. All that vitality comes to life through the festive mood of the people. The sun sets a lot later in the summer so you will find many people outdoors till late, meaning that the braais (BBQs) last well into the evening. That being said, we still have plenty of decorations, Christmas markets, Carols by candlelight to make the season really festive. Last but not least, whether it’s Christmas eve or day, there’s always a big meal involved (which in South Africa is more of an outdoor lunch) to help you get into the Christmas spirit.
