ABOUT THIS SERIES: KILIMANJARO FOOTHILLS

“A range of cities that could not have differed from each other in terms of atmosphere, beautiful nature that is visited by hardly any traveler, and a local population that comes into contact with tourists very little. This is the authentic Tanzania like you won’t find anywhere else, that you can visit in a responsible and sustainable way. We take you with us! ” Charlie

The northern part of Tanzania is visited by many travelers because of the tourist attractions that can be found here. Think of the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. Of course these national parks are beautiful (there are so many people going there for a reason, let’s be real), but we had such a dark brown suspicion that this part of Tanzania has so much more to offer! And so we investigated.

ABOUT TANZANIA
Tanzania is a very popular African travel destination. This is largely due to the popularity of the Serengeti National Park and the Great Migration. Combine it with Africa’s highest mountain (Kilimanjaro) and Zanzibar with its pearly white beaches, and you understand what makes Tanzania so popular. Tanzania has it all!

But what if you visit these highlights in a slightly different way and combine this with off the beaten track gems? Tanzania has a range of cities with a different atmosphere, beautiful nature that hardly any traveler visits and a local population who comes into contact with tourists very little. This is authentic Tanzania, where we take you with us in a responsible and sustainable way!

#1 SAFARI CAPITAL ARUSHA INSIDE OUT

.

SEARCH FOR ‘THE VERY COMMON SPECIES’: THE KHAKI-DRESSED TOURIST
The town of Arusha is located in northern Tanzania and rarely gets the credit it deserves. Postpone that safari for one or two days, and visit the beautiful, well-hidden waterfall, have fun in one of the famous clubs in the city, and indulge in the restaurants that can be found here.

#2 EATING DUST: SAFARI ON A MOUNTAINBIKE

.

DUST HAPPENING ON THE BIKE FROM ARUSHA TO LONGIDO
Because we wanted to look further than just the well-known game parks in northern Tanzania, we decided to develop a mountain bike tour from Arusha to the town of Longido, at the foot of the eponymous Mount Longido. That went by trial and error!

#3 MASTERING HOLY MAASAI MT. LONGIDO

.

FIGHT WITH HOLY MAASAI MOUNTAIN LONGIDO
After our cycling adventure from Arusha to Longido, it was time to hike Mount Longido: an imposing mountain, also known as the smaller brother of Kilimanjaro, which is seen as sacred by the Maasai. And when you see it shining in all its glory, with a beautiful Tanzanian sunset in the background, you also begin to understand why

#5 HOMESTAY DUTCH FARM @ KILIMANJARO

.

GET COMPLETE REST AT SIMBA FARM LODGE

#6 COZY KILI-TOWN MOSHI INSIDE OUT

.

MOSHI: COZY CITY AT THE FOOT OF THE KILIMANJARO
Most travelers consider the pleasant town of Moshi mainly as a base for climbing Kilimanjaro. And that while you can also spend a day in the city here, because there is more than enough to do here. Our own Charlie once lived here for several months in the distant past, and gave us a tour.

#7 SCHOOL LESSON: THE FUTURE OF TOURISM

.

PRECISELY NATURE IN THE PARE MOUNTAINS AND LAKE JIPE
Our last destinations in northern Tanzania were the Pare Mountains and Lake Jipe. Because these areas are still so tourist-free and authentic, we think it is very important to work here in a sustainable and respectful way. And more importantly: involve the local residents in that process!

  • Kenya | Railway Stories

“By train, I travel with my team of content creators from the relaxed coastal city of Mombasa into the rugged interior, from fertile green hills to raw expansive landscapes full of wildlife, ending in chaotic and always lively Nairobi. What is the story behind this train route and is it a great alternative to a domestic flight? We are going to investigate! ” Charlie

Cool, but I want to go on an adventure myself!

CURIOUS ABOUT THE NEXT SERIES: SWAHILI VIBES

Tanzania is the safari island par excellence, and is visited by hordes of travelers every year. They almost always limit themselves to the standard tourist attractions; they usually visit the famous safari parks in the north of the country (think of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater), then end their trip on the tropical island of Zanzibar. A shame, we think, because the Tanzanian coastline is overflowing with culture, is super diverse and full of history!
