ABOUT THE TANZANIA SERIES: SWAHILI VIBES

“The coast of Tanzania is so much more than just the sun-drenched island of Zanzibar, and we are going to show you that. How about swimming with whale sharks, a visit to the bustling metropolis of Dar es Salaam, or a sailing trip along the beautiful coastline? This region is known for the Swahili culture, and we investigate here! ” Charlie

Tanzania is the safari island par excellence, and is visited by hordes of travelers every year. They almost always limit themselves to the standard tourist attractions; they usually visit the famous safari parks in the north of the country (think of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater), then end their trip on the tropical island of Zanzibar. A shame, we think, because the Tanzanian coastline is overflowing with culture, is super diverse and full of history!

OVER TANZANIA

Tanzania is a very popular African travel destination. This is largely due to the popularity of the Serengeti National Park and the Great Migration. Combine it with Africa’s highest mountain (Kilimanjaro) and Zanzibar with its pearly white beaches, and you understand what makes Tanzania so popular. Tanzania has it all!

But what if you visit these highlights in a slightly different way and combine this with off the beaten track gems? Tanzania has a range of cities with a different atmosphere, beautiful nature that hardly any traveler visits and a local population who comes into contact with tourists very little. This is authentic Tanzania, where we take you with us in a responsible and sustainable way!

#1 SWAHILI CULTURE & HISTORY TANGA

.

TANGA: COASTAL TOWN RACKING WITH CULTURE
Tanga is an ancient port city on the coast of Tanzania, and is the perfect starting point for a beautiful road trip along the Swahili coast. But there is also more than enough to see in Tanga itself: it is bursting with culture and history! So it’s super nice to visit the local museum here and then do a city tour, to experience the Swahili culture firsthand.

#2 WHAT TO DO IN HARBOUR CITY TANGA!

.

THINGS TO DO IN HISTORICAL CULTURAL CITY OF TANGA
Besides the fact that Tanga is full of interesting history, there is also more than enough to do and you can spend a day or two here. How about kayaking through the beautiful mangrove forests, snorkeling with the most colorful fish or taking a local cooking class including a visit to the local market?

# 3 TROPICAL PANGANI: ALTERNATIVE FOR POLLUTED ZZB
.

THINGS TO DO IN & AROUND IDYLLIC PANGANI
We unanimously agree at Charlie’s that this charming fishing town is the perfect alternative to Zanzibar, minus all the tourists. So for pearly white beaches, good cocktails and swaying palm trees you are also at the right place on mainland Tanzania. But besides relaxing, there is also more than enough to do: think of a trip to the Maziwe Marine Reserve, paddleboarding and kayaking on the Pangani River, or a tour of the old city center.

.

#4 WHERE TO STAY IN TROPICAL PANGANI

THE BEST ACCOMMODATIONS IN PANGANI
We just said it: Pangani is at least as charming as Zanzibar, and we highly recommend that you stay here for a few days. Pangani does not have dozens of large hotels (which is logical, with the small number of travelers that settle here), but some very nice accommodations that are definitely worth a visit. We show you the different options.

#5 BAGAMOYO: BEACH TOWN WITH MUSIC VIBES!

.

#5 FADED GLORY & HISTORY LESSONS IN BAGAMOYO

BAGAMOYO: ENCOURAGING TOWN WITH AN UNSULFUL PAST
At first sight, the town of Bagamoyo resembles Stone Town on Zanzibar. Mind you, with a turbulent past: Bagamoyo was a (smaller) hotspot for the East African slave trade from the beginning of the eighteenth century, and the city also served as a starting point for many European “explorers” to Central Africa. Bagamoyo is now a small, charming town with a prestigious art school, which you should definitely not miss if you go on a Swahili Beach road trip.

#6 WHALE SHARK DIVING @MAFIA ISLAND

.

#6 WHALE SHARK DIVING @MAFIA ISLAND

MAFIA: HIDDEN PEARL IN THE INDIAN OCEAN
Mafia Island is also referred to as the lost son of Zanzibar. Nevertheless, our preference is actually for Mafia. Why? Here you will still find authentic, non-commercial island life, and there is more than enough to do here: think of the amazing opportunity to swim with whale sharks, visit one of the smaller surrounding islands where you will find ancient ruins (the Pompeii of Africa!), and unwind completely on one of the beautiful, white beaches.

#8 NIGHTLIFE VIBES IN BUZZING DAR ES SALAAM

BUBBLING METROPOLE DAR
Dar es Salaam is a huge metropolis, which at first glance can seem overwhelming due to all that chaotic traffic and an enormous amount of people. But once you get through that, Dar is a bustling metropolis that really deserves more attention than just that ride from your hotel to the airport. We show you what you really shouldn’t miss in this gigantic port city.

CURIOUS ABOUT THE NEXT SERIES: SUSTAINABLE SAFARI

You cannot just take the savannas and the associated wildlife for granted. Africa’s population is growing rapidly and human wildlife conflicts are commonplace. We traveled to the north of Kenya to see the different types of conservancies and to develop new sustainable experiences.
