Rwanda

“One of the most interesting countries, and yet so small! In ’94 the Rwandan genocide took place here. It was a huge humanitarian disaster in which most of the people here either actively participated or became one of the many victims. Things have changed! Today it is arguably the cleanest and safest country in Africa. The country has eliminated corruption and wants to become the Singapore of Africa – they seem to be well on their way. In just 10 days you can travel across the whole country, in neighbouring countries you can see just a fraction of the land in this time. This makes the country easy to combine with one of my favourite countries in Africa: Uganda! ”

About Rwanda

Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills! Rwanda owes this nickname to the endless, rolling panoramas that it holds. Its fertile land full of rainforests is not only popular among the people … the vast and dense jungles are also home to gorillas and chimpanzees.

This fertile land also has a terrible history: the 1994 genocide. The memory of this means that the country is often associated with a war zone, while the opposite is true! Rwanda is ready to be explored: safe, incredibly clean, and very well organized by African standards.

As a relatively small country, you can easily combine Rwanda with nearby countries such as Uganda and Kenya. The country is easy to travel through and Rwandans are warm, friendly and helpful.

Highlights, but slightly different

City Kigali

Kigali

A unique African city. It is clean, focused on sustainability and while here you’ll find it impossible to sit still. You’ll definitely want to explore the various art scenes and colourful markets and of course – meet the locals!

Meer met bergen rondom

Lake Kivu

The largest lake in Rwanda. The backdrop of rugged mountains in every direction and endless blue water. Talk about a real infinity pool! Lake Kivu disguises the border with neighbouring Congo and sits comfortably in the middle of the lush green Great Rift Valley.

Vulkaan Rwanda

Virunga Mountains

There is just one place to find Gorillas, and it’s here! Dian Fossey set the path of Gorilla research here and we are happy to follow. Trek through the rainforest and observe these special mountain gorillas with suspiciously human-like behaviour!

Bergen en meren in Rwanda

Twin Lakes

These two lakes are hidden amongst the steep surrounding hills and with a view of the Virunga Volcanoes – maybe you’ll spot a gorilla!

Bomen

Nyungwe Forest

We can only imagine what this ancient rainforest has seen. Let alone the wealth of flora and fauna it homes.  There are more than 300 bird species and 75 mammals living within, including the chimpanzees!

akagera dieren spotten

Akagera National Park

Savanna, swamps, forests surrounding lakes and rich wildlife. Need we say more!? All this makes Akagera the top destination for a safari, by boat or jeep!

Catholic Cathedral

Butare (Huye)

Known as the intellectual hub of Rwanda this is a city of many layers and many names! Once named Astrida, after the Belgian queen Astrid who ruled, it is also is the city that defied the genocide. Head to the museum for more!

Chimpanzee Rwanda bos

Chimpanzees

These chimps definitely bring Africa’s oldest mountain forest to life! Nyungwe Forest is the chimpanzee’s playground, see them swing from tree to tree, putting the lazy mountain gorillas to shame!
