Where is Mount Suswa located?
Mount Suswa is located just a 1.5-hour drive from Nairobi. Despite its proximity to the big city, this mountain truly feels like no man’s land. No hiking trails, no direction signs, no roads… This volcanic mountain is inhabited by a friendly Masai tribe who seek their livelihood on the vast plains surrounding the inner crater.
How to get to the crater?
Hop on the back of the motorbike with these Masai warriors and begin your journey towards the crater of Mount Suswa. Don’t worry, these men ride here every day. Along the way, you’ll stop at hidden lava caves where every morning a group of baboons gathers to discuss the day ahead. Deeper into the cave, a massive population of squeaking bats hides. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can take a hike to the crater and enjoy the view from the giant Mount Suswa. Of course, you can also do some cross-country riding yourself!
Can you also sleep at Mount Suswa?
On the plateau between the inner and outer crater of Mount Suswa stands the manyatta of one of our Masai friends, who opens his household to our travelers. A manyatta is a settlement of a Masai clan or family. Besides the exceptionally large family, you’ll also be warmly welcomed by some friendly roaming livestock. The evening concludes with a feast, freshly prepared by the campfire. Under the starry sky hanging above Mount Suswa, you’ll enjoy the unique and cultural hospitality! Sleep in the manyatta, or pitch your own tent in the camp. Sweet dreams!
