Kenya

In 2014, the African adventure of our very own Charlie and the founder of Charlie’s Travels, Charles Witlox, began in Kenya. As Kenya serves as the home base for much of our team, we’re intimately familiar with all of its hidden gems. Over the years, we’ve crafted routes and activities that you won’t find anywhere else. And, okay, we might be just a tad biased, but believe us when we say that Kenya is an incredibly beautiful and diverse country. From nature and wildlife to mountains, hills, vibrant tribes, tropical beaches, bustling cities, and charming villages – Kenya has it all!

About Kenya

Kenya is a surprisingly diverse country! Within an hour drive from the capital city Nairobi, you’ll find the lushest tea fields; another hour further, you’re suddenly driving across vast savannas or standing on the shores of Lake Naivasha and doing a staring contest with hippos. From breathtaking nature to inspiring culture, the indigenous peoples let you experience this country in its purest form and will broaden your worldview.

But Kenya is also one of Africa’s most beloved safari destinations for a reason. This country is home to the world’s most beautiful natural parks, teeming with wildlife. You can tick off those Big Five!

And did you know that in Kenya you also have the most stunning white beaches, along the dazzling, azure Indian Ocean?
In short, Kenya has all the ingredients to experience the real Africa. We have discovered the most beautiful routes and hidden gems and would love to show them to you. Questions? Our Kenya specialists are more than happy to assist you: request a free travel proposal or send a Whatsapp!

Sustainable travel in Kenya: what does that look like?

Sustainable travel. You are hip and totally anno 2023 when you travel sustainably. No wonder sustainable and responsible travel is hot and happening. But how do you do it? How do you make sure your intentions match your actions? Below we list a few points on how you can make your trip to Kenya as sustainable as possible.

1. We are on the ground

As our colleagues have built a life here, space has also opened up for making lasting connections. Connections that have grown into great partnerships!

2. Local partners: no middlemen!

We work closely with local partners so that your hard-earned pennies go to local people and not Henk from Amsterdam who has twenty-five hotel chains to his name.

3. Off the beaten track experiences

With our 4×4 or motorcycle under the bum, we are always looking for new experiences. Not only fun for you, but also for the locals.

4. Small-scale accommodations and homestays - no big chains!

We work with local partners with small-scale accommodations, so the money you pay for an overnight stay actually stays in the country where you stay. This way you help the local economy to a higher level.

5. Co2 Offset - collaborations with local initiatives.

To keep your ecological footprint as small as possible, we offset your CO2 emissions. To achieve this, we work with several local partners who join us in striving for a greener world.

6. Travel by train instead of plane!

Flying from Nairobi to Mombasa? Did you know you can also go by train? Six hours of the most amazing views and also kind to the globe.

Unique & Authentic Experiences

Kayaking in Magadi

Imagine this: four days in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and a brief escape from all the tourists. This is truly off the beaten track! Paddling with a kayak from campsite to campsite, guided by someone who can safely lead the way, and camping amidst wildlife. Sounds good, doesn't it?

Mara Morijo Trails

Are you a true adventurer and fancy an adventure deep in the bush of Kenya? Then our unique experience Mara Morijo Trails is just the thing for you. During this adventure, you will not only get to know the beautiful nature of Kenya, but you will also get a delicious taste of culture.

Maasai Tribal Trek

A raw, self-developed route with varied and impressive wildlife: savannah, rainforest and desert. Together with our local Masai partner Robert and other Masai warriors, you will make your way through the Loita Hills.

Mount Suswa

A stunning motorcycle ride with views of volcanoes, hidden lava caves, a hike to the crater, and a visit to Masai Reuben and his exceptionally large family. Welcome to Mount Suswa!

Taita Hills

The new railway from Nairobi to Mombasa has meant that our team has been trying to discover new possibilities for travel as well as checking out different stops along the way. One of those stops is Taita Hills: in our opinion, the perfect place to experience real African life. Together with our local partners, we have developed various walking routes for you to try.

Motorsafari Magadi

Whether you ride yourself or sit on the back of one of our experienced local guides - you will trek motorbikes across the desolate plains of the Magadi Desert and be close to Kenyan culture, wildlife and nature.

Explore Urban Nairobi

In Kenya, you don’t have to go on safari to be amazed at what you see. Meet our hometown! Here, African chaos pairs perfectly with a vibrant expatriate community. Nairobi has many faces. A city as booming as Nairobi deserves an opportunity to show itself in various areas.

Experience Charlie’s Motorsafari’s

"Discover Africa on a 150cc! You will cross the vast plains, meet the local tribes, spot the Big Five and leave the beaten track far behind you and trade it in for the desolate African landscape! Hop on a motorcycle and discover the still largely unknown places in East Africa. Riding through the bush doesn't come with a set itinerary, so brace yourself for an adventure!" - Charlie

Check out our new proprietary routes

The most unique, exhilarating and challenging adventures are, of course, not something we dream up from behind our desks. That’s why we started the Africa Inside Out project. With a car full of content creators, cameras, drones and laptops, we crisscrossed Kenya. Here we worked with the locals to map out new routes for you. We captured all this in over 20 videos and blogs! Below you can see the summary videos of the two Kenya chapters: Railway Stories and Northern Conservancies. Using the buttons below you can find more videos and blogs where we elaborate on the topics from these videos. Check them out!
