RWANDA

“One of the most interesting countries, and yet so small! In ’94 the Rwandan genocide took place here. It was a huge humanitarian disaster in which most of the people here either actively participated or became one of the many victims. Things have changed! Today it is arguably the cleanest and safest country in Africa. The country has eliminated corruption and wants to become the Singapore of Africa – they seem to be well on their way. In just 10 days you can travel across the whole country, in neighboring countries you can see just a fraction of the land at this time. This makes the country easy to combine with one of my favorite countries in Africa: Uganda! ”

ABOUT RWANDA

Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills! Rwanda owes this nickname to the endless, rolling panoramas. It is a fertile country where the rainforest is not only popular among the people… The vast and dense jungles are home to gorillas and chimpanzees.

The fertile country also has a terrible history: the genocide of 1994. The country is therefore often associated with a war zone, while the opposite is true! Rwanda is ready to be discovered: safe, incredibly clean, and very well organized by African standards.

As a relatively small country, you can combine Rwanda with nearby countries such as Uganda and Kenya. The country is easy to travel through and Rwandans are warm, friendly and helpful.

RWANDA HAS SO MUCH BEAUTY TO OFFER

Because of the relatively short travel distances you can already leave the busy capital Kigali within a few hours and drive through the beautiful nature that Rwanda has to offer. It is a diverse country with an emphasis on nature, lakes, hills, and mountains. Ready to spot the big 5 in Akagera National Park? Or would you rather go in search of the primates, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, in Volcanoes National Park? You can then head south to Nyungwe Forest. Don’t forget to take in a section of the Congo Nile Trail! A hike with amazing views over the lake. On the way back to Kigali, you can still take in a bit of history in Butare.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

GENOCIDE MEMORIALS

Rwanda has a very turbulent history, and not even that long ago. Everywhere in Rwanda you will notice that the country has not had it easy. When visiting this country, you should not miss these places.

ISLAND HOPPING LAKE KIVU

Float around in your kayak and discover the local life along the shores of Lake Kivu. Greet the local fishermen as they reel in their catch of the day and set foot on several islands on the lake!

LAKE BURERA

In the northwest of Rwanda – on the border of Uganda and the Volcanoes National Park – sits a smooth mirror-like lake. It is surrounded by green mountains and shaded by three mighty volcanoes. The deep lake was created by volcanic activities that left behind six pieces of land in the middle. These six islands are just as fertile and green as the mountains that surround and the population that live here know how to make very good use of this land. The table is always full of the most delicious matoke, cassava, pumpkin and other Rwandan dishes, all from the island!

GORILLA’S

The best place to find gorillas is at the Virunga Volcanoes mentioned below. Dive into the jungle and look for the world's largest species of monkey. A life-changing encounter and unique experience!

EXPLORING NYUNGWE AREA

Travellers head southwest especially for Nyungwe National Park: one of central Africa’s oldest rainforests that is home to a total of 13 primate species! It is therefore not surprising that this is a popular destination in Rwanda and you are guaranteed to share the path with groups of eager tourists. Don’t worry, the rich diversity of Nyungwe National Park is not only found here, drive further west from the southern Huye and your views will become greener, tropical and full of wonderful biodiversity.

CONGO NILE TRAIL

Gisenyi is the starting point of the Congo Nile Trail. This trail runs from Gisenyi all the way to Lake Tanganyika in Burundi. Those 1000 hills we keep talking about? On this adventurous trek you'll climb just about all of them. Recommended for the real adventurers among us!
