A NEW ROUTE
Enduimet Conservancy is still fairly unknown among travellers. When someone says: ‘Serengeti, Ngorongoro and … ‘, you will then mention Kilimanjaro, Tarangire or Lake Manyara, but Enduimet would not immediately come to mind. So, off the beaten track! For our Africa Inside Out project, we went looking for new routes and Enduimet Conservancy was one of them.
ON THE BACK OF A MOTORBIKE THROUGH THE PARK
At the northern tip of Tanzania, just across the border from Kenya, you will find Enduimet Conservancy. From Arusha or Moshi, this is about a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive. In the afternoon, you jump on the back of a motorbike, also known as a piki piki, and head into the park. If you’re not a fan of bumpy (but adventurous!) motorbike rides, you can also explore Enduimet by car or mountain bike. A ranger will take you into the park, who can tell you everything about the animals and, not unimportantly, knows what to do when the wild animals approach. The free feeling on the back of the motorbike makes this experience unique!
WILDLIFE AND CULTURE
With the wind running through your hair, you’ll watch the giraffes waddling along and the procession of elephants that you’ll see waddling along from a distance. Together with the ranger you go a little closer to this wildlife and take the most beautiful, NatGeo-worthy pictures! You will drive through different landscapes: green grass fields with colourful flowers, desert-like surfaces where the dust blows up from your tyre (straight into your nostrils) and immense mountains that surround you. On a clear day, you can see Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Longido! This area is also home to the colourfully dressed Maasai. When you drive on the paths along the various small villages, the children run outside to wave at you.
If you want to get to know the Tanzanian culture even better, you can stay with the super-friendly Maasai in this area or sleep in a small hotel that seems to have all the necessary facilities; they also occasionally teach children from the area. It is a small, round building with a restaurant in the middle. So you can also play cards in the evening. The hotel is well situated, fairly basic, but with a shower and a nice bed. That is all you need after a dusty ride on the back of your motorbike! Here you can read more about our local partners, the conservancy and the route.
