THE CLIMATE IN KENYA AND TANZANIA
In our homeland Kenya there is no summer or winter, and therefore no spring or autumn! However, there are dry and wet periods. Because of the climate changes, it is sometimes difficult to say exactly when there is going to be a lot of rain, but in general the biggest rainy season starts at the end of March, and lasts until May.
In this rainy season, it rains mainly at night, so you can certainly travel during this period – note that some unpaved roads are difficult to drive on. At the moment nature is very green, just like in the months after the rainy season. Capital Nairobi is situated in a higher area, which means we get some showers here as well in November and December. Exactly during the two most important Dutch holiday periods it is good to be in Kenya: during the summer holidays and during the holidays the weather here is very nice!
Als je op gezinsreis gaat en speciaal voor een safari naar Afrika gaat, kun je het beste komen in de Nederlandse zomervakantie. In juli en augustus vindt hier de Great Migration plaats: dan trekken twee miljoen wildebeests en 500.000 zebra’s door de Maasai Mara (Kenia). Mocht je niet in de zomervakantie op reis kunnen, niet getreurd! De dieren blijven zich namelijk het hele jaar door verplaatsen. Zo zijn de gnoes en zebra’s in november en december te zien in de Serengeti (Tanzania). Neem je telelens mee, want de leeuwen, cheeta’s en luipaarden laten deze feestmaaltijd zeker niet aan zich voorbij gaan!

THE CLIMATE IN UGANDA AND RWANDA
Ook in Rwanda en Oeganda zijn er droge en natte seizoenen. Doordat Rwanda een stuk hoger ligt dan bijvoorbeeld Kenia en Tanzania, is de temperatuur hier wat koeler – hoog in de bergen kan het ‘s nachts zelfs vriezen! Rwanda en buurland Oeganda zijn beiden het hele jaar te bezoeken, bijvoorbeeld voor een trektocht door de jungle om gorilla’s te spotten! Toch is reizen in de droge perioden net iets comfortabeler – van media mei tot medio oktober is de natuur in beide landen supergroen en regent het minder dan in de regentijd. Ook van december tot en met februari is het in deze landen droog en warm!
THE CLIMATE IN SOUTH AFRICA
Because East African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania are situated on the equator, it is about as warm there all year round and these countries have no winter. However, South Africa is far enough from the equator to have a summer and a winter. When it is summer in the Netherlands, it is winter in South Africa! For your family trip, this is the best time to go on safari in South Africa – in July and August it is the dry season here, which makes the Big Five easy to spot (because there is little vegetation and shelter).
