Nature travel

“Spotting the Big Five while tearing across the savanna. That’s probably the image that comes to mind when you think of travelling to the African continent. Nature lovers can go wild here, but remember, Africa is more than just safaris. Meet the mysterious mountain gorillas, dive among the whale sharks or hang out with the cool penguins. Not such an animal fanatic? Then marvel at the varying landscapes: from deserts with blood-red dunes to tropical rainforests and mountains with snowy peaks.”

Travelling through nature in Africa: what is possible?

Impressive mountains

Are you not averse to an exciting hike? Forget the Himalayas and come to Africa! Take on tough multi-day hikes such as climbing Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya or the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ (the Rwenzori Mountains). Fortunately, you don’t have to be a die-hard adventurer to see the most beautiful mountains in Africa. You have options to see them from a hollowed-out tree trunk from Lake Bunyonyi, in a homestay in Lalibela or as you slide down a waterfall in Malolotja Nature Reserve.

Safari bombshell

You are almost guaranteed to come across the Big Five in the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti,  the Ngorongoro or Kruger Park. However, far from the well-trodden safari destinations, you will find the pristine variant: private conservancies! Beautiful parks with untouched nature and an incredible amount of wildlife. For example, discover Enduimet Conservancy in the Tanzanian Maasai country or Erindi Game Reserve in Namibia, where many endangered species thrive. In Lumo Conservancy you can make your safari even more magical by camping in the middle of the park under the naked starry sky!

Face to face with the mountain gorillas

It costs you a fortune, in sweat and euros, you have to dig deep into your pockets for this one. For good reason too, because coming face to face with the very rare mountain gorillas is a priceless experience! You will not find them anywhere in the world except in Volcanic National Parks, like in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. During a trek through the bush – which alone is worthwhile – you will search for these fascinating animals and observe the silverback and his family in utter amazement!

Wildlife different from the Big Five

For the Freek Vonks among us: the African continent is the place to go for an epic raw outdoor adventure. Seeing a lion or elephant is never boring, but there is much more wildlife to spot. Find the Big Five of primates in the steaming jungle of Uganda or the Wet Big Five along the coast of Mozambique. Colourful birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, insects; whatever your craving is, Africa has the fix for you.

Beautiful lakes

Do you want to plant your butt on a beach, your feet in the warm sand and develop a nice tan?  You don’t have to go to the coast for that. You will find the most beautiful and largest lakes in the Great Lakes region! For example, visit the tropical resorts along the laid back Lake Victoria or the green hills surrounding Fort Portal in Uganda, picturesque destinations dotted with Crater Lakes. Hop on the back of your motorcycle and dash through the lush jungle of banana plants, over the green hills, past crystal clear lakes and thundering waterfalls. Go island-hopping on Lake Kivu in Rwanda and discover the local life along the shores.
