ESWATINI (SWAZILAND)

“As the smallest country in Sub-Saharan Africa, eSwatini can be seen as South Africa’s friendly little brother. This small kingdom borders the Kruger National Park in the North and Mozambique in the East, so it is best combined with one (or both of) these countries. The perfect destination for an off-the-beaten-track adventure as it is less crowded and touristy than its immediate neighboring countries!”

ABOUT ESWATINI/SWAZILAND

Swaziland, or eSwatini – renamed in 2018, to mark the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence, is the smallest country in Sub-Saharan Africa. This small kingdom is landlocked by Mozambique and South Africa. A trip to eSwatini can be combined perfectly with visiting the Kruger National Park, and/or the tropical beaches in Mozambique. The country is wedged between two mountain ranges: the Drakensberg Mountains and the Lubombo Mountains Range. Say hello to the typical Swazi landscape: a vast view of rolling, green hills!

eSwatini is one of the last monarchies in Africa. And one with rather high-profile kings! When eSwatini became independent from the British in 1968, it went quite smoothly until King Sobhuza II threw a spanner in the works. He introduced a new constitution in 1973, one that he believed would fit better with the Swazi culture. All power passed to the king and all political parties were banned. Democracy has never fully recovered since then.

King Sobhuza II has gone down in history as the longest and most powerful king ever: he was enthroned for no less than 82 years, accompanied by a total of 70 (!) wives. Imagine having the time for that …
